The thermostat is the brain of your air conditioning system. However, if you have gone to adjust the temperature only to find the display completely blank, you have a problem. Luckily, a blank screen does not mean that your thermostat is completely non-functional. A handful of issues can cause a blank screen, and some are rather easy to fix.
This cause for a blank screen should always be checked first because it is the easiest to fix. Some thermostats are wired in, but if yours is simply mounted on the wall, then it runs on batteries. Some may use AA batteries while others require 3-volt batteries. Take the old batteries out and try new ones before moving onto other causes.
If your thermostat is actually wired in, you may want to check the connection as well. While there are no batteries to change, loose wiring or a tripped fuse can cause this issue as well.
Furnace Door Is Open
Oddly enough, if you recently had your furnace inspected, the door may not be closed properly. When this happens, some thermostats are programmed to shut off for safety when this happens. As this is something you can check quickly, you will want to cross it off your list of suspects.
Your Thermostat Has Died
This is likely what you will suspect first when the thermostat has a blank screen, and sometimes it is true. The older your thermostat is, the most likely this becomes. Sometimes a thermostat will just go out. If this is the case, you will want to look into a new model. It is recommended installing a new one through an air conditioning repair company as they will be able to install it quickly, correctly, and can walk you through all the new features that are available on today’s modern thermostats.
